Japan Ferrous Scrap Consumption Increases by 7.5% in Jan.-June

Japanese ferrous scrap consumption at converters and electric furnaces increased to 28.191 million tonnes by 7.5% in January-June 2008 from same period last year, according to The Japan ferrous raw materials association.

The consumption at converters increased to 7.229 million tonnes by about 21.8% in January-June 2008 from same period last year when Nippon Steel or JFE Steel increased its purchase volume for the reduction of the CO2 emission. The consumption at electric furnaces increased to 16.604 million tonnes by 2.2% and at converters increased to 3.499 million tonnes by 3.7%.

The domestic supply increased by 4.9% to 27.986 million tonnes in January-June from same period of last year.

The return scrap from steel plans increased by 3.7% to 8.011 million tonnes. The scrap from domestic market increased by 4.8% to 19.849 million tonnes.
