Japan Official Cu Ingot Price Returns 600,000yen/t after 10 Months

Nippon Mining & Metals announced on Wednesday the firm raised its electrolytic copper selling price, the market indicator, by 40,000 yen to 620,000 yen per tonne for domestic shipment in August. The price was revised only after 2 days from the previous revision and exceeded 600,000 yen after 10 months.

The firm has raised the price by as wide as 40,000 yen three times in 2009, in March, early April and this time. The latest price is double of 310,000 yen in December 2008. The monthly average would be 616,100 yen without any more revision within August.

Copper spot price reached US$ 5,986 per tonne at London Metal Exchange and 278.90 US cents per pound at New York Commodity Exchange on 2 August, both of which hit the highest since 1 October, 2008. At the same time, exchange rate of Japanese yen is weakening against US dollar. Nippon Mining & Metals’ latest revision reflected these factors.
