OECD Steel Committee to Discuss Steel Trade Protectionism in Paris

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) holds 66th steel committee in Paris on June 8 and 9 to discuss protectionism of steel trade. The committee tries to improve the free trade condition when many countries increase protectionism actions including higher steel import tariff. The committee also discusses stimulus packages’ impacts on steel industry. Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will show opposition to protectionism.

Japanese delegation includes representatives of METI and Japan Iron and Steel Federation. The committee is held with delegations from Russia, European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries along with representatives from Chinese government and China Iron and Steel Association.

The theme is governments’ stimulus package and steel industry policy, steel trade policy, subsidiary to steel industry and counteraction to global warming. The committee also discusses employment and demand condition in steel industry. The committee is expected to propose to fight protectionism when many countries introduce new actions including Buy American type exclusion.
