Steel Price Hike Difficult to Accept Says SAJ Chairman

Mr. Takao Motoyama, the chairman of Shipbuilders’ Association of Japan, expressed opposition to the price increase in steel for shipbuilding on Tuesday. Mr. Motoyama said it is difficult shipbuilders accept steel price hike for shipbuilding while the demand remains low. The price could decrease, he added. While steel price is concerned to increase due to iron ore price hike, Mr. Motoyama expressed supply-demand balance doesn’t have influence to steel price between steel manufacturing and shipbuilding.

Mr. Motoyama estimated the new shipbuilding order increase slightly in 2010 compared with 2009 expecting the global economy would recovers gradually. However, the demand in marine transportation may not recover to absorb the oversupply of ships until 2009, he added.

Japanese new shipbuilding order receipt decreased by 73% to 2.34 million compensated gross tonne in January-November 2009 compared with the same period of last year.
