Hien Electric Industries Doubles Pre-Stressing Tendon Output Capacity

Osaka based ship and marine cable maker, Hien Electric Industries completed construction of the second productive line for pre-stressing tendons (stranded steel wires for pre-stressed concrete) in Osadano plant, Kyoto, Japan. The new line started commercial operation and the output capacity doubled to 600 tonnes per month. Hien expects the sales expansion for concrete bridges and superhighways.

Hien’s original pre-stressing tendon “SUPRO STRAND” is based on the sheathing technology for ship and marine cables. SUPRO STRAND’s inner void is filled and the outer surface is totally coated with thermoplastic resin. The firm supplies 7 or 19 stranded steel wires. Hien has tried to expand the business strategically as one of non-electric-cable businesses.

The second productive line was completed at the yearend whose output capacity is 300 tonnes per month. The new line is dedicated to production of 7 stranded wires with 12.7 and 15.2 millimeters of outer diameter. Another existent line adopts for thicker diameter products. Hien invested 70 million yen for the capacity expansion.

Japanese pre-stressing tendon market is estimated at approximately 70,000 tonnes per year. High corrosion resistance type such as SUPRO STRAND accounts for 10%.
