Japan Al Construction Products Demand to Rise by 1.5% in F2010

Japanese demand of aluminium products for construction applications decreases by 13% to 328,000 tonnes in fiscal 2009 ending March 2010 from fiscal 2008, announced by Japan Sash Manufacturers Association on Friday. The association expects the demand increases by 1.5% to 333,000 tonnes in fiscal 2010 from fiscal 2009. However, the building sash demand decreases by more than 10%. The demand could take time to recover former level while the demand was more than 400,000 tonnes in and before fiscal 2007.

The housing sash demand decreases by 14% to 116,000 tonnes in fiscal 2009 from fiscal 2008 when new housing start decreases by 24% to 790,000 units. The aluminium demand decreases by around 10% for door and exteriors. The building sash demand decreases by 14.8% to 89,000 tonnes when non-wooden building start decreases by 35% to 62.9 million square meters.

The association expects the housing start increases by 8.2% to 855,000 units in fiscal 2010 from fiscal 2009 due to subsidiary for environmental friendly housing. The wooden housing sash demand will increase by 6.9% to 124,000 tonnes. The building sash demand will decrease by 12.4% to 78,000 tonnes in fiscal 2010 from fiscal 2009 due to lower building start in fiscal 2009 while the non-wooden building start will increase by 4.6% to 65.8 million square meters in fiscal 2010 from fiscal 2009.
