Rebar Price to Reach 65,000 yen in April in Tokyo

Concrete reinforcing steel bar market price is increasing at 62,000 yen per tonne for direct shipment from the makers to users and at 65,000 yen for inventory sales by the dealers around Tokyo. The rebar market price would increase to 65,000 yen for direct shipment in April while the rebar makers aim to increase the selling price to 70,000 yen.

The rebar market price increased by around 22% or 11,000 yen for direct shipment from the beginning of the year while the stock sales price increased by 16% or 9,000 yen.

The average monthly rebar order was about 280,000 tonnes in January-March. The order increased before the price hike. However, the order is estimated at around 250,000 tonnes in April, according to the market sources.

The rebar makers lose money in recent months due to narrower margin between ferrous scrap cost and rebar selling price. The makers aim to increase the price when ferrous scrap price shows no sign to decrease.
