Japanese ferrous scrap consumption decreased by 15.2% to 38.929 million tonnes in fiscal 2009 ended March 2010 from fiscal 2008, which decreased for 2 years in a row, according to Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The converters’ ferrous scrap consumption decreased by 3.4% to 11.76 million tonnes in fiscal 2009 from fiscal 2008. The consumption decreased by 19.7% to 21.474 million tonnes for electric furnaces and by 16.7% to 4.765 million tonnes for casting industry. Japanese ferrous scrap supply decreased by 19.7% to 37.942 million tonnes in fiscal 2009 from fiscal 2008.
