Nippon Steel Ships 10,000thT Oil Tanker Corrosion Resistant Plate

Nippon Steel shipped 10,000th tonne of the for high performance corrosion resistant plate for oil tanker, NSGP-1 since the launch in 2007. The firm expects higher demand for the plate with around 5 times of corrosion resistance compared with traditional plate when International Maritime Organization decided to modify the treaty to encourage corrosion resistant plate usage for corrosion control of oil tanker as traditional painting.

The firm shipped the high grade plate for 6 vessels when the high grade plate is used near 2,000 tonnes for a very large crude carrier.

NSGP-1 prevents salt water in crude oil making the pits on the inner surface of the tanks. Nippon Steel increased the corrosion resistance by the adjustment of alloy element in steel.

IMO has adopted the revised International Convention, which mandates the application of corrosion-resistant steel or coating to tankers more than 5,000 deadweight tons as the protection against corrosion. Corrosion-resistance steel was applied due to data of NSGP-1.
