Rebar Price Turns Downward in Tokyo

Concrete reinforcing steel bar market price would decrease from 65,000 yen per tonne for direct shipment from the makers to the users and 68,000 yen for inventory sales by the dealers around Tokyo. The inquiries and shipment decreases. The buyers of general contractors require the price reduction. The rebar makers keep the selling price at current level. However, the price would decrease when some dealers try to reduce the inventory.

The makers aimed to increase the selling price to 70,000 yen per tonne. However, the market price is expected to decrease. One dealer source said they couldn’t keep current price level under slow demand and lower ferrous scrap price. The market sources are concerned the price declines to less than 60,000 yen when the demand remains low.

The price competition among general contractors and rebar fabricators is increasing. The rebar setting up price is decreasing from 30,000-35,000 yen per tonne including bending works. General contractors send order at low price expecting the fabricators would accept the reduction in the construction price, according to small fabricators. The condominium’s construction shows sign of increasing. However, the recovery is still weak to support the rebar market price.
