Japan Carbon Steel Export Increases by 89% in May

Japanese carbon steel export increased by 88.7% to 2.521 million tonnes in May from a year earlier, which decreased for 3 months in a row, announced by Japan Iron and Steel Federation on Thursday. The export increased for 8 consecutive months. The export increased by 4.6% in May from April when the demand is firm in China, South Korea or Taiwan.

Japanese steel export increased to 3.602 million tonnes by 66.7% in May from a year earlier, which was record high in May more than the export which was 3.224 million tonnes in 2002.

Carbon steel export increased to 838,000 tonnes by about double for hot strip, which increased for 11 consecutive months, 474,000 tonnes by 2.4 times for zinc coated sheet, 280,000 tonnes by 41.4% for plate, 337,000 tonnes by 82.5% for cold strip and 113,000 tonnes by 4.4 times for welded steel tube.

Japanese steel export increased to 938,000 tonnes by 34.2% to South Korea, which increased for 12 consecutive months. The export increased to 609,000 tonnes by 31.8% to China, which increased for 7 consecutive months. The export increased to 249,000 tonnes by 10.0% to Taiwan, which increased for 10 consecutive months. The export increased to 460,000 tonnes by 4.6 times to Thailand, which increased for 7 consecutive months.
