Japan Ferrous Scrap Consumption Jumps by 51.9% in 1H

Japanese ferrous scrap consumption increased by 51.9% to 14.701 million tonnes in January-June from the same period of 2009, according to Japan Ferrous Raw Materials Association. The consumption by converters almost doubled when Nippon Steel and JFE Steel increased the scrap purchase.

The ferrous scrap consumption at converters increased by 96.8% to 3.533 million tonnes in January-June from the same period of 2009. The scrap consumption increased by 35.2% to 9.01 million tonnes by electric furnaces and by 42.6% to 1.858 million tonnes by casting industy due to the rebound of steel demand. The supply increased by 55.5% to 14.489 million tonnes. The supply increased by 38.4% to 5.005 million tonnes from steel makers and by 64.6% to 9.484 million tonnes from the market.
