Nippon Steel Stabilizes World First Multi Strand Wire Rod Endless Rolling

Nippon Steel succeeded in stable operation of multi strand wire rod endless rolling in Kamaishi works, which enables high efficiency continuous rolling by joining billet on the line, for the first time in the world. The firm increased endless steel wire rod rolling to 20% of the total rolling at Kamaishi works. The firm improves production efficiency by increasing endless rolling rate to 50%.

The endless rolling process contributes to better rod quality by reducing dimension and temperature change between top and end of billet. Through the technology, Nippon Steel increases coil weight to 2.5 tonnes from traditional 1 or 2 tonnes while with the larger coil, the users can reduce cost by reducing handling and welding times. The firm plans to increase endless rolling rate to 50% considering production lot and transporting condition.

Kamaishi works is Nippon Steel’s wire rod rolling mill, which manufactures cold heading quality, high carbon and carbon wire rod. The production capacity is about 60,000 tonnes per month.
