Japan Electric Wire and Cable Shipment Increases by 5.5% in Augst

Japanese domestic electric wire and cable shipment increased by 5.5% to 53,300 tonnes of copper in August from a year earlier, according to the quick estimation by Japanese Electric Wire & Cable Makers’ Association. The shipment for domestic constructions and related wholesalers is estimated to represent first year-to-year plus in 23 months. On the other hand, actual shipment of optical fiber products in July represented year-to-year minus for 2 months in a row.

Electric wire and cable shipment for domestic constructions and related wholesalers was quickly estimated at 23,000 tonnes for August, year-to-year plus by 4.4%. However, the market size has shrunk by 15-20% compared with pre-shock volume.

Copper wire and cable shipment for automobiles and electric appliances & machines would represent year-to-year plus for 9 straight months. The demand keeps steady for wiring harness and magnet wire applied to cars and home appliances.

Actual shipment of optical fiber products was 2.922 million kilometers of fiber core (kmf) in July, year-to-year minus by 4.9%. The export decreased by 3.9% to 2.272 million kmf, which represented minus for 2 months in a row. The shipment for domestic market decreased by 8.1% to 650,000 kmf.
