Nippon Steel & Sumikin Metal Products Implements Alternate Production after Tsunami Impact

Nippon Steel & Sumikin Metal Products shifted production of square pipe and U large square pipe to Hirohata works from Sendai works on and after March 17th since Sendai works was damaged by Tohoku-Kanto Earthquake and tsunami. Sendai works produced these products at 12,000 tonnes in February. Hirohata works changed working shit to 12 hours of one shift, continues operation at weekend, and tries to shorten delivery lead time for Tokyo to a half day. The firm could implement alternate production utilizing 2 works in East and West Japan.

Sendai works has 16 inch rolling mill and 6 inch rolling mill, those which were submerged by tsunami and suspended. The facilities are likely to need overhaul since electrical system was flooded. Hirohata works has 22 inch, 6 inch and 2 inch rolling mills, presently under operation of 12 hours at one shift. The firm examines workers’ shift from other plant in West Japan.
