Showa Denko Starts Indonesia Alumina Plant Construction

Showa Denko announced on Tuesday the firm held ground breaking ceremony of chemical alumina plant in Tayan, West Kalimantan of Indonesia on Monday. The firm starts operation of the around US$ 450 million plant with around 300,000 tonnes of annual output capacity in January 2014.

Showa Denko plans to ship chemical alumina from the Indonesian plant for Japanese and offshore users instead of the products from Yokohama plant. The firm plans to also sell the chemical alumina for users in Indonesia and neighboring countries for coagulant for water purification and refractory.

Showa Denko has decided to withdraw from alumina production at Yokohama plant to stop disposal of bauxite residue into the sea in 2015.

The Indonesian chemical alumina plant is operated by Indonesia Chemical Alumina, 80% of which Indonesian miner, Antam (Persero) controls with 20% share by Showa Denko.
