Sumitomo Metals Gets World First H-SA700 Order

Sumitomo Metal Industries announced on Friday the firm received world first order of H-SA700 with 700N per square millimeter or more yield strength from Obayashi Corporation. The firm tries to increase the innovative building steel with twice strength of SN490C grade steel.

The high tensile steel was developed as a part of program under research & development of buildings with new structural systems that use innovative structural materials by five government ministries, Japan Iron and Steel Federation and Japanese Society of Steel Construction. With the steel, the building could be used even after the major earthquake while current Japanese quake resistant standards allow buildings to absorb seismic energy by damaging or deforming pillars and beams in the case of level 6 on the Japanese scale. Sumitomo Metals participated in the program to develop the steel product with lower alloy and with better productivity in heat treatment.

Sumitomo Metals also provided SA-TT630 grade steel pipe with 800N/mm class tensile strength for gain tower of world largest broadcasting tower, Tokyo Sky Tree. The firm also uses SSS1000 grade plate with world top of 1,000N/mm tensile strength for the firm’s research & development laboratories in Hyogo. The firm got certification for both the pipe and the plate from Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
