Furukawa Electric to Start OPGW Production in Brazil

Furukawa Electric starts production of optical fiber composite overhead ground wire (OPGW) at the Brazilian communication cable making subsidiary, Furukawa Industrial S.A. Produtos Electricos (FISA) in 2012. The subsidiary launches annual 5,000 kilometers level of annual output capacity to serve Brazilian power network construction.

FISA adds OPGW making facility at the existing plant. The firm is selecting equipment to order. Furukawa Electric decided the production in Brazil with high import tariff when the country expands the infrastructure investment toward soccer World Cup and Olympic game.

Furukawa Electric will have second offshore OPGW plant after Suzhou Furukawa Power Optic Cable (SFPOC) with 12,000 kilometers of annual OPGW output capacity in China. Furukawa Electric provides technical support to Brazil plant. SFPOC expects world OPGW demand will increase for 5 years from annual 80,000-90,000 kilometers level.

Furukawa Electric has indicated new business at FISA to follow growing Brazilian market. Furukawa Electric controls 100% of FISA, which provides optical cable and local area network related products for South American market.
