Japan Electronic Parts Shipment Hits 32-Month Low

Japanese electronic parts shipment decreased by 13% to 240.9 billion yen including shipment from offshore transplants in January from a year earlier, according to Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). The shipment hit the lowest level since 232.4 billion yen in May 2009. The shipment was slow under weak electronics device demand and impact of Thai flood.

The shipment decreased for 13 months in a row through January in year-on-year basis. The shipment decreased when transplants of Japanese automakers and electronics makers were damaged by the flood. Japanese electronics parts makers’ shipment is still slow under higher yen exchange rate.

The total passive parts shipment decreased by 23% to 83 billion yen in January from a year earlier. The capacitor shipment decreased by 27%. The connecting parts shipment decreased by 13% to 59.9 billion yen while the transducer shipment increased for 5 months in a row due to steady shipment of small motor and audio and visual parts.
