NTN Develops World Top Class Sinter Alloy

Osaka based bearing maker, NTN Corporation developed world top class fatigue strength of sinter alloy with more than 350 mega pascal of fatigue strength and more than 95% of true density ratio. With applications in gear and cam, the firm expects the technology contributes to better operation efficiency by reducing cutting process.

Powder metallurgy is solution to reduce material loss and energy consumption in machinery parts making. However, the parts have less fatigue strength than cut processed parts. Sinter alloy cannot be used for gear and other power transmission parts due to the weak point.

The new sinter alloy has more than 95% of true density ratio with 6-10 tonnes per square centimeter thanks to better material mix and sinter condition. Through one press and one sintering, the sinter alloy has more than 300 MPa of fatigue strength, which is around twice of traditional alloy.
