Daiwa Steel to Convert Rebar Rolling Line Drastically at Tobu Works

JFE Steel’s Osaka headed electric furnace steel maker, Daiwa Steel will carry out drastic conversion of rolling line at Tobu works in Saitama, Japan. JFE Steel had decided to integrate the group’s four electric furnace steel makers, including Daiwa Steel, effective on 1 April, 2012. Along the integration, Tobu works will accept roughing mill from Tohoku Steel Corporation, another electric furnace steel maker of JFE group, and establish hot direct rolling system with approximately 1.2 billion yen. The conversion could contribute to better product quality, less substantial material consumption and higher productivity.

Tobu works produce concrete reinforcing steel bar integrally from steel making to rolling. Size lineup covers 10, 13 and 16 millimeters diameter. The current output is 25,000 tonnes per month.

The works will replace existent twist-type roughing mill with 8-stand VH-type roughing mill transferred from Tohoku Steel. Additionally continuous casting and rolling processes will be connected directly to establish hot direct rolling system.

The conversion works will be implemented during long holidays in early May, mid August, the yearend and the New Year. The new direct rolling system is expected to realize high quality rebar production by low-temperature rolling process ad well as to reduce energy and substantial material consumptions. The productivity could also improve. The new line can process a billet with maximum 6 meters length and 600 kilogram weight, larger than present 4 meters and 400 kg.
