JFE Steel’s New Steel Powder Used for Car Pars

JFE Steel announced on Monday the firm started commercial manufacture of new steel powder, JFM4, which is sintered steel material to improve cutting performance. JFM4 was adopted to automotive component for the first time. JFM4 contributes to high speed cutting and longer life-span of cutting tools by about 4 times compared with conventional materials. JFM4 generates a lubricating layer between a cutting tool and a sintered material because JFM4 softens by friction heat in cutting process. Other new steel powder, JFM3 was currently adopted to automotive parts, too.

JFE Steel succeeded in development of JFM4 in 2008. Halla Stackpole Corporation, South Korean automobile steering maker, adopted JFM4 for gear parts this time. JFM3 was developed in 2006, which contributes to high drilling performance. JFM3 was adopted for pistons of automotive shock absorbers.
