FEIC Starts Commercial Sales of EN Train-Car Wires and Cables

Furukawa Electric Industrial Cable (FEIC), which is Japanese major electric cable maker and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Furukawa Electric, announced on Monday the firm started commercial supply of electric wires and cables for train cars to meet European Norm (EN). FEIC projects to increase the sales of EN adjusted train-car wires and cables at overseas since worldwide railway industries try to meet the EN standard.

FEIC successfully accepted orders for EN adjusted train-car wires and cables from several Japanese train car makers at total 60 million yen. The product supply started in late 2011. These train cars will be used in Asian area. FEIC manufactures the products mainly at Kofu plant in Yamanashi, Japan.

General train-car wires and cables show special characteristics such as heat resistance, oil resistance, flexibility and mechanical strength. EN adjusted wires and cables have additional properties including high flame resistance, low smoke evolution, low toxicity and halogen free. FEIC adopted normal grade polyolefin as insulating materials to meet these characteristics.

FEIC also developed lighter and thinner EN adjusted train-car wires and cables, named T-NFL1. T-NFL1 has a half-thick insulator, which realizes 20% lighter weight and 20% thinner outer diameter than FEIC’s normal EN train-car wires and cables. T-NFL1 represents same abrasion resistance and cut-through resistance as normal EN train-car wires and cables despite of thinner insulator.

FEIC has supplied train-car wires and cables mainly to Japanese train car makers for long years. FEIC holds the secondly largest shares in domestic train-car wire and cable market following Hitachi Cable.
