Japan Steel Industry Advance Development of Hydrogen Reduction

Japan Iron & Steel Federation and Japanese 5 major integrated steel makers obtained results of the research for hydrogen reduction technology with COURSE 50, CO2 Ultimate Reduction in Steelmaking process by innovative technology for cool Earth 50, and will advance development by new test plant in fiscal 2012 at ended March 2013.

They plan to develop hydrogen reduction technology which increases hydrogen by reforming of coke oven gas and reduces iron ore by hydrogen. They verified efficiency of increased hydrogen in laboratory which reforms hydrocarbon and tar in coke oven gas by catalytic agent and produce high density hydrogen gas. They construct bench plant which reform tar by catalytic agent in Kimitsu iron works of Nippon Steel with the investment at 1 billion yen and start trial by actual coke oven gas on June 2012 and collect data.

On the other hand, they plant to start trial of hydrogen blow by small blast furnace of LKAB, miner under government management in Sweden, with the investment at 700 million yen on April-May 2012 for the first time in the world.

They achieved the world’s leading reduction level of heat consumption for separating and recovery by chemical absorption technique in process evaluation plant.
