Sumitomo Metals Constructs Steel Sheet Processing center in Tohoku

Sumitomo Metal Industries announced on Thursday the firm constructs coil center in Ohshu city, Iwate prefecture. SSC, subsidiary of Sumitomo Metals, establishes it as new plant, and will start the operation on June 2012 when Toyota Motor sets Tohoku area, North Japan, as third production base and is transporting engine maker and assembly maker to Tohoku area. Sumitomo Metals establishes processing factory of steel sheet for automobile and stable supplies, reduces transportation cost and improves delivery time. Sumitomo Metals will support restoring from the disaster of the Great East Japan Earthquake in Tohoku area. New coil center is constructed in Esashi frontier industrial park. Land scale is about 12,600 square meters. SSC intends to acquire the land until September. There is the park at middle point between Iwate factory of Kanto Auto Works, subsidiary of Toyota Motor, and Miyagi factory of Central Motor, subsidiary of Toyota Motor. New coil center has one slitter with the capacity at 7,000 tonnes per month.

Toyota Motor aims to integrate Kanto Auto Works, Central Motor and Toyota Tohoku on July 2012. SSC will build up the capacity of new coil center step by step when assembly maker and parts maker advance to Tohoku area.

SSC has 2 coil centers in Aichi prefecture and Fukuoka prefecture, and loads important rule on Sumitomo metals’ steel sheet strategy for automobile by establishment of new coil center in Tohoku area.
