JFE Steel to Purchase More Ferrous Scrap to Reduce CO2 Emission

JFE Steel will increase ferrous scrap purchasing volume to 100,000 tonnes for half year to March 2007, while the firm purchased 20,000 tonnes through fiscal 2005 ended March 2006. The firm tries to use more ferrous scrap at all steel works in Japan, which are Keihin, Chiba, Fukuyama and Kurashiki, to reduce carbon oxide emissions. The firm plans to use over 1 million tonnes of ferrous scrap per year as substitutions for iron ore and coking coal and decrease pig iron melting ratio to around 90% toward fiscal 2008.JFE Steel started pilot charge of ferrous scrap into converters since February 2005 and currently purchases total 5,000 tonnes of ferrous scrap per month in Keihin area of East Japan woks and Fukuyama area of West Japan works.
