Sumitomo Metals Launches New Titanium Alloy

Sumitomo Metal Industries succeeded the mass production of new titanium alloy, Super Sumitomo Alloyed Titanium or SSAT-35 with 50% cold rolling cost compared with alloy with 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium. The new alloy with 3% Al and 5% V has same cold rolling workability as pure titanium along with same level strength with traditional Al 6% and V 4% alloy. The firm markets the new alloy for airplane and various applications. Sumitomo Metals succeeded to develop SSAT-35 with much better workability than traditional alloy. The new alloy has ultra fine metal structure and 810-1,130 mega pascal of tensile strength, which is more than pure titanium and alloy with Al 3% and V 2.5% and same level as alloy with Al 6% and V 4% depending on conditions. The firm can produce the new alloy cold rolling coil with 1 millimeters thick and 700 mm of width by existing process. The firm can start mass production depending on the order. The firm markets the new alloy as material for golf club and other application and starts to study for airplane applications. Traditional Al 6% and V 4% alloy represents more than 90% of titanium alloy market. The alloy, which is used for engine parts and structural parts of airplane, needs rolling process packed between steel.
