Showa Denko Widens Line-Up of HD Media by PMR Technology

Showa Denko announced on Thursday the firm started commercial production of 1.3-inch hard disk (HD) media by perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology for the first time in the world. The storage capacity is the world largest 40 gigabytes per disk. The new HD media can be cheaper than Compact Flash (TM registered by San Disk of USA).1.3-inch HD media is smaller and lighter than 1.89-inch HD media, which realizes lower electric consumption and higher impact resistance. Showa Denko expects the demand for high-vision video recorder, portable music player and mini-size notebook computer.The firm started the world first shipment of PMR method HD media in June 2005. PMR method enables the remarkable expansion of storage capacity. The firm has supplied 1.89-inch, 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch HD medias with the world largest storage capacities.
