Thailand to Secure Land in South for Integrated Steel Project

Ms. Sudjit Inthaiwong, Deputy Secretary General of Thailand Board of Investment, said on Tuesday Thailand government prepares land in southern part of the country for new integrated steel plant. According to Ms. Inthaiwong, the timeframe for the project is not decided yet. The government starts the site selection, negotiation for site acquisition and getting agreement of local residents.

Thailand government started to solicit world major steel makers to build integrated steelworks in November 2007. Nippon Steel, JFE Steel, Arcelor Mittal and Baosteel Group Corporation have filed the concept letter including condition for needed infrastructure to the board of investment.

The board expects steel maker candidate with state of the art technology, plan to make more than 2 million tonnes per year of high quality steel, high level environmental standard and responsible commitment for local community and government.
