CODELCO's Copper Premium could Keep Over $135/T in 2006
Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO) of Chile is expected to set the copper ingot premium for Japanese to more than US$ 135 per tonne for 2006 shipment as 2005. Higher freight is said to contribute to the high-level of premium. The firm could keep the high premium policy as 2005 though international copper ingot supply is getting to balanced position from shortage before. International copper ingot supply, depending on researchers, was around 1 million tonnes of shortage in 2004. The supply is getting to balanced position in 2005. The shortage is expected to narrow to less than 100,000 tonnes in 2005, which is a tenth of 2004, under worldwide expansion and smooth production by smelters. Some expect the supply could turn into oversupply.
