Showa Denko goes into Gallium nitride LED chip market
Showa Denko announced on Monday it would go into Gallium nitride LED chip market. The firm developed flip chip structure of high output, 12 meter watt, using a technology of thin film overgrowth technique of a hard disk and compound semiconductor. The firm plans to establish a production equipment of annual 30 million units and ship samples from November and produce in full swing from 2005 after garnering of approval. And it aims monthly 300 million units and 20 billion level business in 2008.Gallium nitride LED is used mainly for back lights of liquid crystal display and keypad of cell phone. Demand of it is rapidly increasing as use of white LED, and it is expected to be used as headlight of automobile and general lighting.
The blue LED chip that this company developed is the one that a gallium nitride crystal was made it grow on the sapphire substrate of two inches by "SP method".
