Japanese Company to Established Nickel Plant in Philippines
Sumitomo Metal Mining, Mitsui Corporation, and Sojitz holdings Corporation announced on Thursday that they constructed the plant of the nickel middle article production in the Palawan land of Philippines, and started the test operation. It moves to formal operation in the beginning of the next year. They stopped the purchase of the nickel mat from Australian supplier that ends the contract within the year, and they transposes to purchase of the materials from the new company. This development issue "the Coral-Bay-Nickel project" processes the low-grade oxidization ore using the technology with which Sumitomo Metal Mining improved the high-pressure sulfuric acid exuding method (the HPAL method), and produces the nickel cobalt mixture sulfide of a middle article. It has attracted attention as national development program of industrial technology that collects the parts for nickel from low-grade oxidization ore at low cost, while nickel demand is globally expanding for mainly stainless steel.
Materials are low-grade laterite ore that was not suitable for the existing nickel smelting, accumulated for 20 years while it had been intact, and the amount of accumulation is about 16 million tonne now.
