Fujikura to reduce the production capacity by 20%
Recovery of information-communication business in big electric wire makers is delayed unexpectedly. Fujikura announced a plan that reduces the production capacity of its business by 20% in fiscal 2004. The firm will discard equipments and shift 300 of employees, and post several billion yen of extraordinary charge. Other companies are also improving the production system and an estimate of business productivity, and a growing number of firms feel uncertain future. Fujikura expects that sales amount of information-communication sector in first half of fiscal 2004 decrease by 4 billion yen from originally expected to 34 billion yen and operating loss is 1.8 billion yen. About second half, sales are not likely to reach 42 billion yen, but the firm aims that business profit reach originally expected.
The first quarter settlement in 6 big electric wire makers was below the previous year results on information-communication sector. Domestic demand including mainly long-distance fiber-optic cable marked a sizable drop and the profit was choked off by the reduction of products price.
