The profit of Furukawa Electric to remain as originally anticipated
Furukawa Electric expects that first-half results of fiscal 2005 ending March and full-year consolidated accounting will remain as originally anticipated because of active of light metal sector. Integration of Furukawa-Sky Aluminum affects an increase of profit hugely. But the profit of OFS, a subsidiary in the United States, could be trimmed since information and telecommunications sector is affected by low domestic demand and decline of the price beyond all expectations. In first quarter, sales of light metal field increased by 14% for a year earlier and the business profit rose by 100% because of an increase of sales of plate material for automobile and the plate for LNG tank and promotion of streamlining by the integration with Sky aluminum.
On the other hand, as for information and telecommunications sector, optic parts for FTTH is in demand modestly but domestic demand of fiber-optic cable keeps below originally anticipated. In OFS, though sales amount is expected to increase from fiscal 2004, the decline of product price put pressure on corporate profits. OFS is expected to restore profitability in fiscal 2006 at present rate.
As for electric wire business for industry, appreciation of copper and crude oil price is not shifted to the product price and the profit is so tight.
