Kobe Steel and Toyota Develop Aluminium Hood
Kobe Steel and Kobe Alcoa Transportation Products (KATP) developed the aluminium-made hood to decrease pedestrians' injury jointly with Toyota Motor Corporation. Toyota already uses the product for redesigned Crown, which was released last December. Kobe Steel and KATP will establish aluminium's predominance over any other materials in terms of easing shock to pedestrians in car accidents as well as weight saving.
Although the number of death toll by car accidents has decreased in recent years, pedestrians represent 30% of the death toll. Collisions with engine through hood injure pedestrians heavily. The aluminium-made hood has wave shaped inter structure for the first time in the world. The hood has equal strength as traditional steel sheet hood. According to Kobe Steel, the new product can absorb impact with larger area improving safety.
Kobe Steel has tackled to apply sheet, extrusion and forging aluminium to automobile. The firm accelerates the move with comprehensive solutions including the new product for more aluminium applications for automobile.
