Sumitomo Metal Mining to Expand 2 Layered Coated Board Output
Sumitomo Metal Mining increases production of double-layered coated board more than 6 months earlier than original plan. The firm tries to meet increasing demand for chip on film, which is replacing tape automated bonding, used for liquid crystal display integrated circuit due to finer circuit line width along with increasing demand for liquid crystal panel. The firm increases the output to 2 million square maters per year by the end of July compared with original the end of March.
Double-layered coated board is flexible substrate material, which is made by sputtering copper on polyimide film with electrolytic copper plating. The firm has around 90% of market share for the product for large thin-film transistor liquid crystal display. The product is one of major products for the advanced materials unit.
The firm plans to expand the output capacity to 4 million square meters per year by fiscal 2006 ending March 2007 under mid-term plan started April 2004. The firm already expanded the capacity to 1.2 million square meters at Isoura Plant in Aichi in December 2003. The firm will expand the capacity to 2 million square meters earlier under tight supply for strong demand.
The firm already expanded 3 coating lines totaling 2 million square meters per year of output capacity. The firm is starting expansion lines by the end of July.
