Yeongju plant of Alcan Taihan Aluminum is the last story
of our reports on Korean nonferrous industry mainly on Poongsan and ATA.
The plant was established as subsidiary of Taihan Electric Wire in 1990 starting
operation in 1993. The plant is held by Korea Wire and Alcan in 1999.
The plant has 4 melting furnaces with 2 of 45 tonnes and 2 of 30 tonnes, 4 holding
furnaces, 2 casting furnaces, a surface cutting machine, 4 reheating furnaces,
a hot rolling mill, a 3-stand tandem hot finishing mill, a 2-stand tandem cold
rolling mill, a single stand cold rolling mill, 7 annealing furnaces and other
processing machines.
50% of Raw materials for the plant are from Russia and 20-30% are from Western
World including Australia and Canada and rest of balance is from China and other
countries. The plant produces 250,000 tonnes of rolling products in 2003 including
100,000 tonnes of hot coil for Ulsan plant.
Yeongju plant can produce hot rolled products with averaged 3 millimeters thick
with a 3-stand tandem hot finishing mill. The more Yeongjufs hot rolling
mill increases its running rate, the more efficiently Ulsan can operate cold rolling
mill increasing total production.
