Rio Tinto to Start Commercial Production of HIsmelt
Rio Tinto of United Kingdom will start commercial operation of pig iron plant, HIsmelt in Western Australia in some weeks. The firm will ship first products after 3-6 months of start up period. The firm pumps up the plant to annual 800,000 tonnes of full capacity in 2 years. The firm supplies the products for joint venture partner of Nucor of USA and Shougang Steel of China along with third parties. The firm tries to sell the new iron making process, which has lower initial cost with no coke oven and sinter plant and lower operation cost with lower grade raw materials, for steel makers.
