Sumitomo Metals to Expand Pig Iron Output by 500,000T at Kashima
Sumitomo Metal Industries will reline idled no.3 blast furnace with 5,050 cubic meters of capacity and expand it to comparable capacity with no.1 blast furnace with 5,370 cubic meters, which started operation in September 2004, at Kashima works. The firm will start operation of the expanded no.3 blast furnace by around summer in 2007 while it stops operation of no.2 blast furnace with 4,800 cubic meters of capacity. With the brand-new 2 blast furnaces, Kashima works will increase pig iron making capacity by more than 500,000 tonnes per year meeting annual 8 million tonnes of the down stream operations.
