Kobe Steel to End Chromate-treated Electrogalvanized Steel
Kobe Steel announced on Thursday it would eliminate chromate treated electrogalvanized steel sheet by March 2005. The firm shifts to chromate free products completely. The move with removal of facilities is first for Japanese steel makers.
Chromate treatment is to improve corrosion resistance of flat steel and paintability. Electro galvanizing steel with the treatment is used for appliances and office automation equipments.
However, the products are shifting to chromate free, which doesn’t contain chromium compound in coating films, when people try to reduce environmental burden materials like green procurement.
The firm removes chromate treatment facilities, which spray chromate treatment liquid, wash and dry steel sheet, from electro galvanizing line. The firm reduces environmental burden materials by removing chromate treatment liquid from the site. The firm said almost all users agreed the shift to chromate free products.
On the other hand, hot dip galvanizing steel, which is used mainly for automobile and construction materials, is not always treated with chromate. The products have less urgent reason to shift to chromate free products than electrogalvanized one. Kobe Steel, however, will develop chromate free products to reduce environmental burden.
